Glorious Bible

Glorious Bible, all its pages,
Firm and fast will ever stand,
To and through eternal ages,
Since its leaves by heav'n were penned.

Many books with different stories,
Pleasing are to carnal minds;
But the Bible's filled with glories,
And all other books outshines.

It displays our constant duty,
To our God, ourselves and man;
But it opens greater beauty,
In the glorious gospel plan.

Then it well may be esteemed,
As the glory of our land,
Souls (it shows) how they're redeemed—
Raised from thrall to God's right hand.

When I on its pages ponder,
If but faith assists mine eyes;
Lo I stand amazed and wonder,
At the glories they comprize.

For 'tis there that blessed Jesus,
Shines in all His characters;
Prophet, priest and king that frees us
From the power of sins and fears.

May we praise indulgent heaven,
For the gospel's gladsome news,
In the sacred records given,
Which we daily may peruse.

Spread them Lord, the earth all over,
Pope and pagan's glooms dispel:
That blind heathens may discover,
Thee a God immutable.

—by Ebenezer Jayne (1754–1826)

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105
