George MullerGeorge Müller (1805-1898) was a Prussian-born English evangelist and philanthropist. A man of faith and prayer, he established orphanages in Bristol and founded the Scriptural Knowledge Institution for Home and Abroad.
1805 Born at Kroppenstaedt, Prussia. (Sept 27)
1819 His mother dies.
1825 Enters Halle University to study theology. (Spring)
Converted to Christ following a visit to a small Bible study in a home. (Nov)
1828 Graduates from Halle. (March)
1829 Arrives in London to train with London Society for promoting Christianity among the Jews. (March)
Meets and forms friendship with Henry Craik. (Summer)
1830 Ends association with London Society for promoting Christianity among the Jews. (Jan)
Baptized by immersion.
Marries Mary Groves in Exeter. (Oct 7)
1831 Mrs. Müller gives birth to stillborn baby. (Aug 9)
1832 George (and Mary) moved to Bristol with Henry Craik to be pastors at both Gideon Chapel (May) and Bethesda Chapel (June)
Daughter Lydia (their only child to survive infancy) is born. (Sept 17)
1834 Established Scriptural Knowledge Institution for Home and Abroad. (Feb)
Son Elijah born. (March 19)
1835 Son Elijah dies. (June)
1836 Opens first children's orphan home on Wilson Street, Bristol. (April)
1837 A Narrative of Some of the Lord's Dealings with George Müller - Part 1 published.
1841 His father dies.
1849 First Ashley Down, Bristol, orphanage home opens for three hundred children.(June)
1857 Second Ashley Down home opens.
1862 Third Ashley Down home opens.
1869 Fourth Ashley Down home opens.
1870 Final (fifth) Ashley Down home opens. Now cares for 2000 children with a staff of over 200.
1870 Wife Mary Müller dies. (Feb 6)
1871 James Wright (Müller's eventual successor) marries Müller's daughter Lydia. (Nov 16)
George Müller marries Susannah Grace Sangar. (Nov 30)
1875-92 Worldwide preaching tours. Travels over 200,000 miles to 42 countries.
1890 Lydia Wright (his daughter) dies. (Jan)
1895 Second wife, Susannah, dies. (Jan 13)
1898 Died in Bristol, England. (March 10)
